Berne is an ideal departure point for many attractive excursion destinations, such as the Alpine resort of Zermatt, picturesque Lucerne, the Jungfraujoch (Europe’s highest-altitude railway station) and the lovely Lake Geneva region. But as Switzerland’s capital, our scenic city is also a major attraction in its own right. Visitors can’t resist the 6 kilometres of picturesque arcades, the medieval magic of our historic old town on the River Aare, the legendary Bearpits and all those beautiful boutiques. Berne has also succeeded in combining the traditional and the trendy when it comes to culture - for example, classical music, dialect rock, the late Gothic cathedral and the prestigious Paul Klee art collection. Switzerland’s central location in the heart of Europe makes it easily accessible (within a few hours’ travelling time) from all major European cities. Many international airlines fly to Zurich and Geneva Airports and Basle, from where there are frequent rail links to Berne. Berne itself also has an airport with European flight connections. The city is linked to the main European motorway and rail networks, and from Berne all major cities and centres in Switzerland are within easy travelling distance.
